GUWAHATI: Two women have been allegedly raped, with one among them found dead, in Chirang and Baksa districts of
Assam in the last 24 hours.
In the first incident, Chirang Police recovered the semi-nude body of a 25-year-old woman from the Deosri forest along the India-Bhutan border.
Police suspect she was raped before being murdered with a sharp weapon.
"Two persons - Kisun Murmu and Sum Hembrom - have been arrested in connection with the case. Kisun has admitted to killing her with the help of Sum. Kisun claimed the deceased betrayed him despite being in a relationship and that he killed her in a fit of rage," a policeman.
The body has been sent for post mortem.
In the second incident, a 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men on Sunday night when she was returning home after attending a Bohag Bihu function at Duwa under Simla Police Station in Baksa district.
The
rape survivor said three men gagged her and forcefully took her to a nearby river bank where they gang-raped her.
They also threatened with dire consequences if she discloses the incident to anyone.
Later, an FIR was lodged after she shared her ordeal with her family members, .
"One Tapan Das has been arrested in relation to the incident. He had been allegedly harassing the girl for the last two years after she turned down her proposal to be in a relationship. Further investigation will reveal more details," said a policeman in Baksa.
He added that they have launched a manhunt to nab the remaining culprits.
Crime against women in the state has been on the rise over the last few years.
On April 25, city police here arrested a quack on charges of raping and impregnating a 15-year-old girl.
Last year, 1602 rape cases were reported in the state.
