Water discharge to be stopped at Bhavani Sagar reservoir

Discharge of water for irrigation purpose from the Bhavani Sagar reservoir is to be stopped from May 1.

Water from the reservoir is let into Lower Bhavani Project (LBP) canal, Kalingarayan Canal and Thadapalli – Arakkankottai canals for carrying out irrigation in over 2.47 lakh acres in Erode, Tiruppur and Karur districts. The full depth of the reservoir is 105 feet while the storage capacity is 32.80 tmc. Water release began from the reservoir in January, 2019 for carrying out irrigation and was stopped due to rains on April 21. However, water was again released from April 27.

Officials said that about 12 tmc water was released into LBP canal while about seven tmc was released into Thadapalli – Arakkankottai canals while 3.80 tmc was released into Kalingarayan canal for irrigation. A total of 22.80 tmc was released so far for irrigation, they added. They added that discharge would be stopped at 6 a.m. on May 1 after which water would be released only for drinking water needs. The current water level is 52.34 feet while the storage is five tmc. The inflow stands at 147 cusecs.
