Highlights

  • How to calculate the match-winner quotient for a team: Divide the number of one-time Man of the Match award winners by the total number of Man of the Match awards for the franchise.
  • The closer the ratio veers towards 0, the more dependent a franchise is on a particular player or just a select few.
  • A ratio of close to or equal to 1 indicates multiple match-winners.

48 IPL matches so far. 36 different Man of the Match awards. Given that the award has always gone to a player from the winning side this IPL, it's no surprise then that the teams in the top half have bagged the most awards. But here's the thing. Are the teams too dependent on a single match-winner? Is the onus on just one or two players to ensure game after game for the team? Yes, cricket's a team sport with each contribution (with bat or ball) making a difference in the match.

But we're talking match-winners who single-handedly won the match for the team. Which means stellar performances like Ajinkya Rahane's century for Rajasthan against Delhi or Manish Pandey's swashbuckling 83 not out for Hyderabad versus Chennai in a losing cause, count for little.

Take the case of Kolkata Knight Riders who, in 80% of their wins, have piggybacked on the brilliance of Andre Russell. On the other hand, Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals have had different players every time (read a new match-winner) picking up the Man of the Match award during each of their five victories this season. The match-winner quotient for a team, therefore, is simple to calculate: Dividing the number of one-time Man of the Match award winners by the total number of Man of the Match awards for the franchise. The closer the ratio veers towards 0, the more dependent a franchise is on a particular player or just a select few. A ratio of close to or equal to 1, on the other hand, indicates multiple match-winners.
