Following the autopsy done by a veterinarian, the forest personnel on Tuesday buried the carcass of 68 Painted Storks including 65 juveniles at Koonthankulam birds’ sanctuary where sudden thunderstorm damaged nests atop trees from where the birds fell down and died on Monday.
Sugumar, who conducted autopsy of the chicks, said most of the injured young ones were “in good shape now.”
“Since 14 birds have suffered fractures as they fell down from a height or broken tree branches fell on them, they were sent to the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli, for treatment while proper line of treatment with oral fluids and antibiotics were given to injured chicks. Most of the injured birds are able to walk and eat properly. As these birds are responding to the treatment and eating, they will be all right within a day or two,” he said.
As forest personnel had purchased sardine fishes for feeding the injured birds, the chicks, after eating their most favourite dish, are walking around with less difficulty.
Besides, the gale destroyed over 800 plantain crop in Koonthankulam, Moolaikkaraipatti and Munanjipatti villages. The strong wind uprooted six electric poles in Koonthankulam that left the village powerless. The Tangedco personnel worked overtime to restore electricity supply on Tuesday.
