The Children's Park on Police Lane in Pandeshwar, which was in ruins, is getting a facelift and soon, children of policemen could enjoy the facilities at the park.

Mangaluru Ramakrishna Mission has taken up the refurbishment of this park spread over 2,500 sq ft at a cost of ₹ 2.5 lakh, according to Swami Ekagamyanandaji, convener of the Mission’s Swatch Mangaluru Abhiyan. The Mission has renovated a few small parks within the city during its cleanliness drives in the past and the Police Lane park is beign added to that list.

The Mission said that the park was in dire need of refurbishment as it was covered with dirt and garbage. Playing equipment for children were in ruins dissuading children from using them. Moreover, the park had become a safe haven for beggars and the drunk who had made it almost their home.

Volunteers of Swatch Mangaluru Abhiyan have now cleared the park of garbage and debris and repaired the damaged compound wall. Outer walls of the park are now getting paintings while artists were doing art work on them to make the park pleasant for children.

Meanwhile, new playing equipment too are being installed at the park even as interlocking tiles would be laid for a walking path. Saplings too would be planted in the coming days. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) is sponsoring the renovation work.

The swamiji said that the park would formally be opened for the public on May 5 in the presence of Police Commissioner, senior police officials and police personnel.
