Ashton Kutcher has been named on a list of potential witnesses for the trial of a man accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 2001.

Kutcher's name appears alongside more than 200 others on the list that has been put together ahead of the long-awaited trial of Michael Gargiulo.

The list was obtained by Radar Online on Tuesday.

Gargiulo is accused of murdering three women, including Kutcher's ex-girlfriend Ashley Ellerin.

The fashion student was found mutilated in her apartment in 2001. Gargiulo, an air conditioning repair man, had allegedly become fixated with her after fixing a heater in her shared home.

He is said to have broken into her apartment and stabbed her to death.

Kutcher was meant to pick her up that night to take her to a Grammy's party but when he arrived at the apartment and got no answer, he left the scene.

Ellerin was dead inside, covered in blood.

Kutcher has since told how he saw dark red stains inside the apartment when he peered through the window but that he thought it was red wine.

At the time, he was a rising star thanks to the success of That 70s Show and Dude Where's My Car.

Gargiulo was arrested in 2008 after seven years on the run.

He is also accused of murdering Tricia Pacaccio, 18, was also violently stabbed in 1993 and Maria Bruno in 2005.

He also allegedly tried to murder Michelle Murphy in 2008. It was after that alleged attack that he was taken into custody.

It is not clear why it has taken so long for him to go to trial but after years of delays, it is due to begin next month.

Kutcher, according to friends, had 'nightmares' about finding Ellerin's body for years.

After his arrest, police made a desperate appeal to find a woman who had been photographed with Gargiulo before his arrest.

They issued an appeal for information in 2015.
