KOLKATA: A 40-year-old unidentified man was run over while walking on the Circular Railway tracks near Dahi Ghat around 8.30pm on Friday. Police said he did not heed warnings and refused to get out of the train’s way.
GRP officers took the victim to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Officers said they were investigating how the man managed to get on to the tracks so late in the evening.

“Perhaps he had no idea of the train coming up behind him. There is no CCTV footage to ascertain the exact sequence of events and we are banking on the train driver’s statement. He may also have been speaking on his cellphone. Though we have conducted the post-mortem, we have sent out messages to all police stations concerned to try and identify him,” said a senior GRP officer.
Accidents like this often take place despite the railway authorities taking several steps, including putting up posters and banners at stations and having GRP personnel direct people to the footbridges whenever they find anyone crossing railway tracks illegally.
