Mumbai: Youngsters have been in the forefront to getting to know the candidates in their constituencies through online campaigns on social media. Helping with setting up polling booths, they have also taken up various initiatives for Lok Sabha elections seriously. Young voters claim they understand the importance of voting and how it impacts governance thus directly affecting provisions for the education system.
It is not just about voting but electing leaders who can make rules and laws for the education sector, claim students. Delnaz Quereshi, a student, said, “Often, we think elections are just about voting for a person. But these votes help us elect leaders and form a government. The rules and laws implemented by a government directly affect our education space and we got to look at the bigger picture.”
Casting votes and elections directly affects us as students, claim youngsters. Jehanlal Mishra, a student, said, “For us students, education and career is our most important challenge. We want our leaders, irrespective of any political party, to improve the education system. Important issues like fees, courses, admissions and examinations, which directly impact us and the government should take interest in such matters.”
There is no point in complaining later, revealed students. Chris Jezubel, a student, said, “We can get to know our candidates and the work done by them before voting. It does not make sense to sit back and complain later if we ourselves have voted blindly.” Mithali Ranjan, a student, said, “Not only youngsters but all of us got to do our homework before voting. We have the power and accessibility of digital media and we should use it for our benefit.”
