Campillo claims maiden European Tour title in Morocco

2019-04-28 19:49

Rabat - Spaniard Jorge Campillo won his maiden European Tour title at the 229th attempt on Sunday with a two-stroke victory at the Trophee Hassan II event in Morocco.

The 32-year-old, twice a runner-up already this season, finally made his breakthrough as birdies on the 16th and 17th holes saw him pull away at the top of a crowded leaderboard and card a two-under-par 71.

It was Campillo's 229th event on the tour, having finished in the top ten 28 times without managing to seal a win.

"It's been a while but it's worth it," Campillo, who also finished third at the Indian Open earlier this month, told europeantour.com.

"I'm just going to enjoy this. I made so many promises that I have to do after I win, that I might have to take a few weeks off.

"I'm proud of the way I finished. I finished today like a champion."

The world number 90 went into the last day one shot behind overnight leader Erik van Rooyen, but the South African could only manage a one-over 74.

Campillo appeared to have blown his chances with back-to-back bogeys on the front nine, but played the final 11 holes in four-under to finish the tournament on nine-under-par overall.

Americans Sean Crocker and Julian Suri finished alongside Van Rooyen in a tie for second on seven-under.
