Karimadom women look at life afresh

T’puram: Vineetha M, a resident of Karimadom, could not conceal her happiness on receiving the first work order within weeks of completion of vocational training programme.
Vineetha is among 37 women from Karimadom, who now have high hopes of earning a livelihood to support their families.
These women participated in various vocational training programmes conducted by the Don Bosco Veedu Society as part of its project to provide vocational training to women and help them earn a living.
A total of 20 sewing machines were distributed at an event held on Saturday and an exhibition of their work was also displayed.
“Initially, when the project was started, there was not much participation from here. We decided to conduct an exhibition of their works at Karimadom itself, so that others will be inspired to join the courses. In the next training programme, we had to conduct a screening process, as we received an excess number of registrations. The training was completed for two batches and we have also arranged a work order to stitch bedcover and pillow covers for them from a trader in Chalai. The first consignment was delivered and the revenue was distributed among them. We do not take any share from the revenue, as it is a social project,” said Tony James, project coordinator.

Earlier, training programme in food processing, paper-bag making and catering were held.
“My husband is a daily wage labourer and I wanted to support my family financially. We all hope to start a tailoring unit here. The amount received from the first order will be most cherished moment of my life,” said Mumtaz S, a participant in the training programme.
