CHENNAI: Police on Friday detained and later let off a suspected member of an extremist organisation that has demanded a separate state - Kamtapur - splitting West Bengal and Assam. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the suspect was a Naxal and he was sentenced to three years in jail.

The suspect, Kandarpa Das, 23, hailing from Assam, worked as an assistant at a hospital in Arumbakkam. He threatened some of his colleagues claiming that he was a militant. His shocked colleagues told retired police officer Ramadoss, who works as a liaison officer at the hospital. A team from the Anna Nagar police nabbed Das. Officials of the special investigation division and Q branch questioned him. Police checked Das's phone and found a photo of him carrying a gun. Inquiries revealed that Das was a member of extremist outfit Greater Coochbehar Liberation Organisation (GCLO). Anna Nagar police have informed their counterparts in West Bengal about the apprehension of Das.
The Criminal Investigation Department in West Bengal has informed police here that they arrested Kandarpa Das along with three others after they formed GCLO. Police nabbed them after they used a decoy and invited them for a meeting near Roy Para at Naxalbari. Nirmal Roy, a resident of Agomani near Dhubri in Assam, posed as the leader of GCLO.
