NEW DELHI: A rickshawpuller died and a girl sitting on the rear seat of the rickshaw was severely injured when a speeding Honda City car belonging to an east Delhi businessman overturned on the rickshaw near Jail Road in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar on Saturday evening. Police said that the girl has been admitted to a hospital in a serious condition.
The incident happened around 7pm when the car, which was being driven by the businessman’s driver, went out of control and hit a divider due to which it flipped on its right side and flew onto an oncoming rickshaw. The rickshawpuller, Mohammad Tahir, was crushed under the car.
DCP (west) Monika Bhardwaj said that a case has been registered against the driver, who has been detained.
He was caught by the locals before being handed over to the police. A probe revealed that the car belonged to Sukhdev Malhotra, a resident of Krishna Nagar.
Eyewitnesses told the cops that the driver seemed to be in a hurry and kept honking to get past the crowd of rickshaws on the lane he was travelling in. Suddenly, he found an empty stretch and started speeding, due to which he lost control and hit the divider.

Police say that Tahir was a resident of Uttam Nagar. His body has been sent for an autopsy and will be handed over to his family members on Monday.
Efforts are being made to record the statement of the girl, around 18 years old, sitting on the rear seat of the rickshaw. Police have conducted a medical examination of the driver to find out whether he was drunk during the incident. The car owner has been informed.
