Holy cow! Really?

BJP candidate Sadhvi Pragya Thakur addresses a poll campaign rally at Neelbad in Bhopal on Friday
Top oncologists of Ahmedabad have slammed Pragya Singh Thakur , BJP’s Bhopal Lok Sabha candidate, over her claims that she beat cancer through a combination of cow urine and other cow products. Dr Shakuntala Shah , former head of surgical oncology at Gujarat Cancer Research Institute who also treats breast cancer patients, said that there is no evidence to show – published or peer reviewed data – that testify cow urine is a cure for cancer.
“There are no publications yet which will testify that cow urine is a cure for cancer and there is no peer reviewed data. We never promote treatments with cow urine,” Dr Shah said. Pragya has claimed that she was diagnosed with cancer in 2010, when she was in the custody of the Maharashtra ATS for her alleged involvement in the 2008 Malegaon blasts. At that time, she had undergone a series of tests at JJ Hospital. The then Dean of JJ, Dr TP Lahane, told Mirror that there were “no signs” Pragya was suffering from a major ailment.
“The CA 125 breast marker test to determine cancer was negative. Her MRI scan report was absolutely normal, and so was the ECG report,” a senior doctor from JJ Hospital said. Pragya, who recently raised the hackles of senior police officers for her comments on 26/11martyr Hemant Karkare, told a TV channel on Monday ahead of filing her nomination that she was a patient of cancer. “I cured myself by consuming gau mutra and panchgavya mixed ayurvedic herbs,” she said.
“The belief is very strong amongst people due to spiritual leaders and others advocating the consumption of cow urine to cure cancer. I have not seen any major benefits to cancer patients by consuming cow urine. On the contrary, some patients, including those who have had chemotherapy, may catch infection due to cow urine.”
The entire treatment takes 6 to 8 months and there are no scientific reports yet to support such claims made by Pragya Thakur, said Dr Dileep Srinivasan, senior consultant and oncologist at Zydus Hospital. According to Dr Srinivasan, “I deal with scientific treatment and scientific facts, all our treatment is on reproducible results. If someone claims that he or she is getting cured by having cow urine they are entitled to their opinions. We first do diagnosis for one week then we decide whether chemotherapy or surgery comes first and then we treat accordingly.”
Dr Devang Bhavsar, radiation oncologist at CIMS said, “Documented diseases with the histopathology report is termed as cancer. In the medical term we strongly recommend not to deviate public who are undergoing original cancer treatment with proper medics and therapies. With cow urine, cancer cannot be cured" Dr Shefali Desai, consultant breast surgeon, Samved Hospital. “The only proven way to treat breast cancer is by surgery and if required chemotherapy/ hormonal therapy and radiation therapy. Other approach needs to be validated scientifically.”

Dr Kaustubh Patel, senior consultant, Head and Neck Surgical Oncology at HCG, said, “When a layman starts believing this, they will not take proper treatment for breast cancer, especially the early-stage breast cancer. They will report to cancer institutes only in advanced stage when it becomes incurable.” Dr Vivek Bansal, radiation oncologist at Apollo CBCC Cancer said that they get a number of patients who come up with these things.

There is no scientific literature, clinical trials or authentic medical records which support such statements. The statement from Thakur is a disservice to the society
Therapies like radio therapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are used to cure cancer. There are no publications yet which will testify that cow urine cures cancer
As far as scientific and logical way goes I have never seen or heard cancer is cured by cow urine. Breast cancer is now treated with effective drugs and modern medicine
