Fee hike row: Dahisar school yet to revoke 40 expulsions

Four days after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) education department asked Dahisar-based Rustomjee Troopers School to withdraw the expulsion of 40 students over a fee dispute, the school is yet to do so.

“We went to the school twice after the education department issued a letter. Despite repeated attempts, we could not meet the school representatives and the expulsion still stands,” said a parent of one of the students who was expelled.

Earlier this month, parents of students who protested the 38% fee hike received leaving certificates and expulsion letters of their children. Following the expulsion, BMC’s education department wrote to the school directing the management to take back the leaving certificates with immediate effect.

“The school was asked to submit a report in the matter which has still not reached the education department. As per a hearing in March, it was told the school cannot take action against students until the report is submitted. Since the education department is yet to receive the report, the expulsion of students must be taken back immediately,” read the department letter.

School officials had said “their stand on the issue continues” and the expulsion will be revoked only if the parents pay their dues. On Saturday, school officials did not respond to HT’s calls and messages.

Parents said that they will continue to fight until they get justice. “We have also written to the child rights commission and hope the school will take back the expulsion,” said a parent.
