SuperSport, Wits encounter ends all-square

2019-04-27 20:34

Cape Town - While it is still mathematically possible for Bidvest Wits to win the Absa Premiership, their 1-1 draw against Supersport United at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday night made it very, very unlikely.

With just two fixtures remaining in the campaign Wits now trail Orlando Pirates by five points, meaning the Bucs need just one point from their remaining games to prevent the Clever Boys from becoming crowned champions.

On the night Wits definitely played like a side chasing a league championship trophy, showing a ton of drive and determination but were continually thwarted by a well-organised SuperSport United defence.

Ronwen Williams was fantastic between the sticks for the home side and was without a doubt the sole reason his side the ground with a point.

He was beaten once, though, thanks to a simple tap-in by Sfiso Hlanti. The defender began the move himself with a cutting through ball for his wing from out of defence and he followed up all the way to find himself in the right place at the right time to steer home the rebound when Gabadinho Mhango's shot was saved.

Unfortunately their lead only lasted six minutes as, on the stroke of half time, Clayton Daniels rose above the defence to header a Aubrey Modiba corner into the back of the net.

Matsatsantsa's defence was so resolute that even when Dean Furman was sent for an early shower for picking up his second yellow card in the 65th minute, Wits were still unable to break them down.
