Two held for stealing Rs 51L from Audi car

Two ‘thak-thak’ gang members have been held for stealing Rs 51 lakh in cash from the Audi car of a factory owner after puncturing the car’s tyre in west Delhi’s cantonment area last week, the police said Friday.

The police have managed to recover Rs 49.51 lakh of the stolen cash even as three of the five-member gang remain on the run, Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (south), said.

The targeted businessman lives in south Delhi’s Greater Kailash and owns a factory in Naraina. He was targeted when he returning home in his car and was accompanied by his driver and another employee.

“When the car was on the Ring Road in the Delhi Cantonment area, two gang members came on a scooter, used a sharp object to puncture the tyre,” the DCP said.

Moments later, three other members came on a motorcycle and intercepted the car to alert the occupants about the deflated tyre. “As the businessman and his employees were changing the tyre, the gang members made away with the bag containing Rs 51 lakh,” the DCP said.

A case was registered at Delhi Cantonment police station. A team of south district police got a tip about the suspects being in Madangir. Two men and a minor boy were nabbed on Thursday.

At their instance, the stolen cash, barring Rs 1.5 lakh, was recovered. The DCP said that this gang particularly targeted luxury cars during evening hours when businessmen are expected to return home with cash. Typically, two members of the gang would puncture the tyre while three others would be tasked with making away with whatever they could get their hands on.

Thak-thak gangs knock at the car window on the pretext of asking for an address/informing the driver that his/her car tyre has been punctured and making the person get down from the car. When the victim is out, they overpower the person and steal laptop bags or other valuables in the car.
