While it may not look like much, this third-generation Pontiac Firebird featured General Motors’ most aerodynamic design ever at the time of its launch, way back in 1982.

Dropping a Firebird body on a high-riding frame and transmission without making any visual modifications, like this weird creation, however, totally negates the point.

Identifying what type of Firebird this is can be tricky, but if we were to guess, we’d say that the smaller wing design (as opposed to the wrap-around rear spoiler) and the front spoiler aesthetic point to this being a mid-80s production model (85/86). Afterwards, the previously-mentioned Aero Wing became more prominent, while the front spoiler on early models (82-84) looked completely different.

Huh? What is it good for?

We suppose that, under a very specific set of circumstances (say, the zombie apocalypse or something) you could find a use for such a contraption, but not much else. In fact, it’s its sheer weirdness that landed it on Reddit’s dedicated thread for poor car mods.

Now, believe it or not, we have seen more embarrassing-looking Firebirds in the past, such as this blue Trans Am with chrome wheel arches and a horribly-trimmed interior where the upholstery looks like it’s been sourced from an old, beaten-down couch.

As for what a successful Firebird project looks like, you might want to check out the world’s most accurate KITT replica. Maybe to some, especially those not old enough to remember the Knight Rider, it might look a bit cheesy, but a. it’s been painstakingly made with no expense spared (which is why it cost $50k), and b. it actually drives like a normal car. Oh, and it looks way better than this… thing over here.
