Mercedes-AMG is determined to bring its high-performance models into the new, low-emission era. They have already taken a first step in this direction by launching the mild hybrid “53” models.

Moreover, the new GLS 580 uses an AMG-designed 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 that works together with a 48V electric motor. AMG boss Tobias Moers talked about this version of the flagship SUV in a sit-down with Road&Track at the 2019 New York Auto Show.

“The development was done by us, including the 48-volt system. We’re going to use that as well”, he explained. “Initially, we kicked it off for the 63 engines for the GLE and GLS, and now we’ve brought it to[the GLS 580”, Moers added, stating that “it’s part of the future”.

The exec revealed that “at the beginning of 2021, there will be no [AMG] car launched without an electrified powertrain. We’re heading fast in that direction. I think the share of electrified powertrains is going to be higher in the performance segments than in other segments in 2025. It’s the key to bringing that segment to the future.”

As for the 65 models and their V12 engines, they might adopt the hybridized V8, Moers said, in contrast to the 45-Series, which won’t get any electrification at all.

Introduced last year, the 53-Series models debuted with the CLS, E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet. All of them, including the GT 53 4-Door Coupe that joined the lineup this spring, are powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six paired to an EQ Boost starter alternator that feeds the 48V system. The internal combustion unit delivers 429 hp and 384 lb-ft (520 Nm) of torque, whereas the EQ Boost provides an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft (250 Nm) of torque.

The most extreme electrified model will be the upcoming AMG One hypercar, with a Formula 1-derived powertrain consisting of a 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and four electric motors for a maximum combined output of 986 HP.
