After the successful wet run of motors in the Package-6 pump house of Kaleshwaram project without any glitches on Wednesday and Thursday, the engineers have set their sights now to repeat the feat in the Package-8 pump house at Ramadugu in Karimanagar district where they are set to deal with motors of higher capacity of 139 MW each.
As some of the project engineers call them fondly as 'Bahubali' motors since they are the largest capacity pumps used to lift water in the country till date, the pump house will have seven motors with 139 MW capacity each to lift about 2 tmc ft water a day for a height of about 120 meters.
“Only Palamuru-Rangareddy project will have higher capacity pumps than those – 145 MW capacity each in one of the pumping stages – in Package-8 of Kaleshwaram,” a project engineer stated.
He explained that of the seven pumps to be made functional in the Ramadugu pump house, five are ready for the wet run as their dry run has already been completed successfully.
The work on two other pumps is in the advanced stages of completion and expected to be completed by May-end or in the first fortnight of June, even in case of any delay.
The project engineers stated that works in both Package-6 and 7 would be completed in all terms by May-end to enable taking up the wet run of Package-8 pumps.
Wet run
“The Yellampally water being used to conduct wet run of the four pumps in Package-6 now is stored in Nandi Medaram reservoir and it could be used for the wet run of Package-8 pumps too”, they said. Package-7 includes construction of an approach channel for about 2 km length from Nandi Medaram reservoir to the mouth of twin tunnels running for another 15 km.
The twin tunnels would continue for another 4.133 km in Package-8 before letting water into the surge pool.
Gravity canal
The water that would come out of delivery cisterns of Package-8 pump house would be let into a 5.750 km gravity canal that would carry the water into the Flood Flow Canal for its onward journey to Mid Manair reservoir.
Meanwhile, the wet run of the second pump in Package-6 pump house near Nandi Medaram was taken up successfully on Thursday. The engineers have also taken up simultaneous wet run of the two pumps later in the day.
