The danger and accidental swallowing of cigarette butts among children playing in the sand and sea will also be avoided.

According to the issued information by government the cigarette butts contribute to the largest product of marine waste, ahead of plastic, highlighting that one cigarette butt can pollute up to eight litres of water and take up to ten years to decompose.

This is a voluntary measure and the town councils will be deciding the areas which will become a part of the network.

Since the initiative is not a law or legal prohibition so the local police is not authorized to patrol beaches and prosecute the smokers.

In parts of Spain the initiative is already underway and informative materials is being distributed to the local councils around the islands.
