other sports Updated: Apr 26, 2019 17:19 ISTIndia’s hopes of winning a singles medal at the Asian Badminton Championships were squashed on Friday as PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal were beaten in the quarter-final stage.
2012 London Olympics bronze medallist Nehwal went down 13-21, 23-21, 16-21 to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in a hard fought match. Nehwal, a former world number 1, failed to match Yamaguchi’s swift moves on the court and lost out the important points.
2016 Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu was the next to bite the dust as she was comprehensively beaten 19-21, 9-21 by China’s Cai Yanyan. The 19-year old prodigy has been making her mark in the international circuit since last year and she was in devastating form against her Indian rival.
Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma had earlier lost out in the men’s singles event.
