Tie-dye may not be your first choice for everyday wear, but the ’90s trend is having a real moment in the fashion spotlight right now. Spring 2019 runways were replete with the psychedelic pattern in every iteration possible, from pastel-dipped dresses to rainbow-hued blazers. Though a majority of designers like Prada and Dior interpreted the hippy-centric pattern in subtle shades, Prabal Gurung and R13 presented vividly dyed ensembles that bordered on ostentatious. Whether you’re a minimalist at heart or a hardcore maximalist, this year’s take on tie-dye promises to fit everyone’s liking.

Shirts, sweaters, swimsuits—there really is no holding back when it comes to the treatment tie-dye is being given this season. The rule being followed, however, sees tie-dye pieces being counterbalanced with solid hues. Dior’s cropped jeans in tie-dye were teamed with a structured black shirt; Prabal Gurung’s violet, orange and maroon tie-dye sweater came paired with a bright orange sarong-style skirt.

Proenza Schouler gave the trend an uptown makeover with dual-toned tie-dye shirts that were teamed with denim skirts. Prada kept it classic with short dresses featuring an ombré effect. Meanwhile, R13 went all out with a T-shirt and blazer set in rainbow colours, worn with denim shorts.

Celebrating the spirit of Coachella, Gigi Hadid—who has truly developed an affinity for the nostalgic print—picked a tie-dye jacket by Ganni that came in bright colours of orange, pink and black. Hadid beautifully balanced out her loud jacket with a white camisole worn underneath, and white trousers peppered with minimal floral prints. Colourful jewellery accentuated her look.

Another Coachella look saw Hadid decked in a tie-dye maxi dress that exuded hippy vibes.

And the supermodel has also taken to wearing the trend on her nails. Need we say more?

Among other known names, Leandra Cohen of Man Repeller recently opted for a T-shirt with psychedelic swirls. The denim shorts and beige jacket perfectly balanced out the look.
