A victim in the Lafayette homicide\, arson\, stabbing incident shares his story

That stabbing survivor, thomas day, is speaking out on the same day his accused attacker is released from the hospital.as we first reported on news 18 at noon, andrew alcorns is now in an ohio jail.

Weeks ago, he survived shooting himself in the head ter a nine- hour standoff with police in that county.

We're still awaiting a timeline on his extradition back to indiana.

3 in the meantime, we're learning more about what exactly happened.the survivor of that april home invasion says he's lucky to be alive.

Thomas day was stabbed 29 times.he spent three weeks at a hospital in indianapolis and now he's back in lafayette recovering.news 18's micah upshaw joins us with his story.

3 thomas day thomas day has spent the past few weeks reflecting on life.when he went to sleep on the night of the incident, he never expected to wake up narrowly escaping death.

3<thomas: i believe angels, angels saved me.

If it wasn't for my angels i would be dead.

Micah: thomas day has been looking back on the day he almost lost his life.thomas: i went to sleep like a normal night, right and i was sleep and then all the sudden i heard like two gun-- it sounded like two firecrackers going off.micah: he got up to see what was going on.

That's when he says he saw a man pointing a gun at his landlord ron whiles.thomas: i grabbed the gun, i threw the gun on the side and put him in a choke-hold, had him hit the ground and i told the landlord to call the cops.micah: according to his autopsy whiles was shot multiple times.

Thomas: my landlord was like, i can't move.

So during this whole time he was stabbing me and all that but i was not letting him go.micah: day was stabbed a total of 29 times.

He managed to get away but he says it wasn't easy.thomas: i called 911, i told them i got stabbed.

And as soon as i did i told them the address and as soon as i did i seen a fire coming at me.

I don't know all the sudden there's a fire coming at me and i said by the way there's a fire and they said get out the house.micah: day escaped the house through a side window.

He was later taken to a hospital in indianapolis to be treated for his wounds.police have identified andrew alcorns as a "person of interest" in the attack.

He's currently behind bars at a jail in dayton, ohio.

It just makes me mad.micah: day, whiles and the suspect were the only people known to be there when it happened.

However, day believes there was someone or something looking out for him.thomas: it could have been my dad.

Because he died of heart disease so that could be him looking out for me.micah: for now day is looking at each day with a new perspective.thomas: i'm enjoying the small moments.
