Residents of Sankara Nagar in Pammal have made a representation to the Pammal Municipality, seeking some changes to the walker’s lanes that are being laid on both sides of Sankara Nagar East Main Road.
They want both the lanes to be 10-feet-wide.
At present, the Municipality is laying walkers’ lanes on the western side of the stretch, with a width of 15-feet, and on the eastern side, with a width of five feet.
The total width of the road is 60 feet. The carriageway of the road is being laid, to a width of 40 feet.
S. Mariappan, president, Sankara Nagar Vari Selluthvor Nala Sangam, Pammal, says, “ The walkers’ lane on the eastern lane of the road is being laid along a stormwater drain channel. During monsoon, if there are blockages in the the channel, the lane can get flooded. So, we want the lane to redesigned in such a way that we can get around this problem.”
Besides, the residents have requested the Pammal Municipality and the Kancheepuram District Collectorate to establish a Public Distribution System (PDS) outlet on road, in the dead-end section.
At present, residents of Sankara Nagar go to a PDS outlet located at Sankara Nagar 12th Street. If steps are taken to construct a building and shift the PDS outlet to Sankara Nagar East Main Road, residents will be benefitted a lot. The area is centrally located and has adequate space for a PDS outlet, the residents add.
We have been taking up this issue with the Municipality and the authorities concerned for many years, at regular intervals, but no action has been taken so far, says Sangam.
The authorities concerned at Pammal Municipality have promised to do the needful.
