GURUGRAM: A 24-year-old inmate in
Bhondsi jail allegedly committed
suicide by hanging himself in the early hours of Thursday. He hanged himself in the toilet of the jail’s hospital with a noose made out of a bed sheet.
Rahul alias Moti, a resident of Jalandhar’s Dhobi Ghat, was arrested in an armed snatching case on April 15. Thereafter, he was sent to judicial custody in Bhondsi jail. He was also booked for another case of theft in June last year.
A magisterial probe has been ordered into his death. An
autopsy was conducted in the presence of a magistrate on Thursday, where the doctor confirmed the cause of death as suicide.
According to police, on Wednesday morning Rahul was shifted to the jail’s hospital barrack owing to abdominal pain. The jail authorities said he had din in the night and went to sleep. “Around 6am on Thursday, another inmate of the same barrack raised the alarm after he found Rahul hanging from an iron grille in the toilet,” police said. The jail officials and wardens reached the spot and called doctors. The superintendent of Bhondsi jail informed the police and a team along with forensic experts reached the prison to examine Rahul. “The reason behind the suicide is unknown yet. We have informed his family and a magisterial probe has been launched. We are investigating what could have driven him to take the step,” said inspector Surender Kumar, station house officer, Bhondsi police station.
