Hales to take part in England's CWC training camp

2019-04-26 16:32

Cape Town -  Batsman Alex Hales will link up with the England squad for their pre-Cricket World Cup training camp in Cardiff on Saturday.

There were doubts over Hales' participation in the World Cup, which kicks off on May 30, after his county side Nottinghamshire confirmed last week the batsman had "made himself unavailable for selection and no timetable has been set for his return to action".

He missed the first three One-Day Cup games for his county side due to 'personal reasons' and concerns continued to grow about the Hales' availability for England's 50-over fixtures.

But, in a huge positive for the World Cup favourites, England confirmed that Hales will join their squad for the pre-World Cup training camp on Saturday.

The 30-year-old has been a key part of England's rise to the top of the ODI rankings, scoring 2419 runs from 70 matches at an impressive average of 37.79.

Hales is facing a battle to earn a starting spot in Eoin Morgan's side for the global tournament, with Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy nailing down the opening spots, while Joe Root has been deployed at number three recently.

England preliminary World Cup squad:

Eoin Morgan (captain), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Tom Curran, Joe Denly, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood
