Sree Chitra Tirunal institute wins nat’l IP award

Thiruvananthapuram: Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) has secured the National Intellectual Property Award 2019 in the category ‘Top Indian Research and Development Institution/Organisation for Patents and Commercialisation’.
The award given to outstanding innovators, organizations or companies once a year on the occasion of the World Intellectual Property Day by the Nation IP office under department of industrial policy (Union ministry of commerce and industry), comprises a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, citation and memento. Functioning under the department of science and technology, SCTIMST has a mandate to provide high quality patient care in cardiac and neuroscience super specialties and to promote research and development of medical technologies.

The award was received by institute director Asha Kishore from Ramesh Abhishek, the secretary of department for policy and promotion of industry and internal trade (ministry of commerce and industry) at a function held in New Delhi on Friday.
According to an official release issued here, the institute has transferred 54 technologies to various companies for commercialization, and it has 97 Indian granted patents. Another 127 patent applications are awaiting approval. The institute is also the applicant or co-applicant in 21 foreign patent applications, the release said.
