VISAKHAPATNAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a
high alert along the Tamil Nadu and
Andhra Pradesh border as the low pressure over the Bay of Bengal is growing into a cyclonic storm named 'Fani'. The cyclone is likely to hit the coasts of the state by April 30.
The cyclone appeared as '
Depression' stage on Friday over the Bay of Bengal.
Rainfall activity associated with squally winds will begin along the coast from April 28.
The wind speed is expected to be around 90-110kmph along the South
Coastal Andhra Pradesh from April 29.
On Friday, the collectors of Nellore, Prakasam and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh have been alerted by the government to start precautionary measures. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
A senior IMD officer told TOI that the present 'Depression' system is expected to strengthen into a tropical cyclonic storm, which will be called
cyclone Fani, a name given by Bangladesh, in next three days.
"Since the system is also expected to course through a long route over the ocean, it can gather a huge volume of moisture, which cause extremely heavy rains during the landfall."
