Even as Lucknow University grapples with the fake marksheet racket that was allegedly being run by varsity staff, more skeletons related to the issue tumbled out of the examination department’s closet.

On Thursday, the varsity’s examination office staff came across an alleged fake marksheet of LU, which was submitted on behalf of a former student seeking a migration certificate.

After a preliminary inspection of the document, the staff pointed out that the figures on the marksheet did not tally with the student’s marks in LU records.

“The student’s marks in the marksheet did not match with our records. Considering this, we have withheld the marksheet and asked the student to appear in person and clarify about the discrepancies,” said SK Shukla, registrar, LU.

According to LU sources, the said marksheet was of a woman who completed BSc from Lucknow University in 2004. “As per her marksheet, she did her first year from CMS Degree College and the next two years from IT College. This is also suspicious because ideally students are not shifted to other college while pursuing a course,” they said.

The woman had applied for a migration certificate as she wanted to pursue further studies from another university.

University officials also intimated the police about the findings.

Last week, the police arrested six people, including two LU officials, for their involvement in the alleged fake marksheet racket.

As per the police, the suspects were part of the fake marksheet nexus that operated from outside the university. “These people were strategically placed in those sections of the university that deals directly with handling, processing and verification of marksheets,” said an officer.

Every year after the exams, two tabulation charts – ‘Blue’ and ‘Red’ – are reportedly prepared and kept in a locker in the office of examination controller. The key of this locker is with a superintendent who is the only person authorised to take out the chart for marksheet verification, said NK Pandey, spokesperson, LU.

Though Pandey claimed that it was impossible to take out these tabulation charts, sources at the examination controller’s office said the two charts were easily accessible to peons and clerks posted in the department for most part of the day.

STEPS TO PREVENT SCAMS

The LU administration initiated some steps to prevent fake marksheet scams.

The V-C transferred four peons from the examination department and the process of digitisation of documents was also started.

The varsity administration also restricted the access to the examination office and began installing CCTV cameras at strategic places across the office.
