They demand separate accommodation for female students

Students of Government College of Education in Vellore staged a sit-in protest on Thursday to highlight their grievances to the college administration, which has not heeded their demands.

Students demands included separate hostels for women and men studying in the college.

One of the protesters said, “We chose this Government college since we could not afford to pay huge fees at private institutions. Since the hostel is being frequented by outsiders at the behest of the management, girl students are in constant fear for their safety.”

Many male students have decided to move out to private rented accommodations for this reasons, the protesters alleged. When the students complained to the college principal-in-charge, Selvi, there seems to be no reaction from her side, the students said.

“Hence it was decided to conduct this sit-in protest today and if no action is being taken, our stir would intensify,” said a student participant. Attempts to contact the college principal to ascertain her views proved futile.
