The Opposition Naga People’s Front has petitioned the Nagaland Assembly Speaker for disqualification of seven of its suspended MLAs for defying the party’s declaration to support the Congress candidate in the Lok Sabha election.

Election to the State’s lone parliamentary seat was held on April 11.

In a statement on Wednesday, the NPF said it has filed disqualification petition against its seven rebel MLAs.

“Openly going against the party’s decision amounted to voluntarily giving up membership of the party. By doing so, the MLAs attracted provisions under the 10th Schedule of the Anti-Defection Law as amended in 2003. The NPF Legislature wing was thus empowered to file and pursue the disqualification petitions against the MLAs,” an NPF spokesperson said on Thursday.
