Huge influx of inbound tourism shouldn’t swamp Japan

A lot of the problems I read in the article in terms of dearth of benefit for locals monetarily, and regarding lifestyle quality, are certainly mirrored all over the world in destinations struggling with handling a sudden growth in travelers.

Creating more transparency in tourism along with setting up regular discussions between local destination management, business owners and community groups can put into practice changes that provide better benefits to society overall. Tourism is in need of a better policy balance as many residents only see the problems of the overtourism without any benefit. Finding ways for locals to keep hold of a decent quality of life and actually benefit from tourism is vital.

Of local dissatisfaction, Kyoto has been a focal point — a destination that already had a healthy domestic tourism is now getting millions of inbound travelers — for example, 7.4 million in 2017.
