VADODARA/ SURAT: A controversial clerk working at MS University’s Faculty of Technology and Engineering (FTE) was arrested by Surat police for cheating.
Kanu Patel, a clerk with the department of electrical engineering at FTE, was arrested in connection with a complaint filed by a classical dance teacher Chaita Mehta. Mehta, a resident of Seema Row House on Ghod Dod Road, had submitted a complaint at Umra police station alleging that Patel had cheated her by promising to provide her students exposure in
Mauritius. For this, the students and parents had paid a total of Rs 6.90 lakh.
Mehta used to run Bharatnatyam classes at a rented hall in Achman society on Ghod Dod Road. Patel who had got in touch with Mehta had introduced himself as one running a firm that organizes cultural tours outside the country.
Patel is known for his involvement in multiple cheating cases in which he promises students of dance classes of participation in international events at foreign destinations. He is suspected to be involved in similar fraud in Rajkot and has also tried to dupe some parents in Bhuj as well, police sources said.
“My daughter’s dance teacher had informed me that one Kanubhai from Vadodara takes dance groups to participate in international events. I was also ready to join and pay Rs 70,000 as fees as that would have helped my daughter in her career. But at the last moment, a friend of mine warned that it would be a fraud,” a Bhuj-based parent, who does not wish to be quoted, told TOI.
Just in December last, after a long drawn inquiry,
MSU had terminated Patel for negligence in duty and irregular attendance at the faculty.
Patel was chargesheeted in November 2015 but it was only in August 2018 that the university had initiated departmental inquiry against him. Later, after he was found guilty of charges, a showcause notice was issued against him in October 2018. But as Patel did not respond to the showcause notice, his services were terminated in December.
