Gurugram Hospital revamp to start, depts will be moved to Sec 10

To make way for renovation and expansion of the Civil Hospital in Civil Lines, several departments of the hospital will be moved to different locations starting Friday, district health department officials said. They, however, maintained that plan for the new building will be drawn up after the elections.

In a meeting with deputy commissioner Amit Khatri Thursday, health department officials finalised plans to temporarily shift the 70-bed gynaecology ward to the Civil Hospital in Sector 10.

“The shifting will be done in three phases. The gynaecology ward is being shifted first to the Sector 10 Hospital. The surgery department will also move to a government polyclinic in Sector 31 as soon as its proposal gets a nod from the district administration,” said Dr BK Rajora, civil surgeon, Gurugram.

The Civil Hospital in Sector 10, inaugurated in 2012, currently has 30 beds and four gynaecologists, and according to officials, the 70 beds and six gynaecologists at Civil Lines will move there Friday. “The Sector 10 hospital has enough space to accommodate the 70 beds, which is why the decision was taken,” said Dr Jai Bhagwan Jatain, medical officer.

The 200-bed Civil Hospital in Civil Lines was built in 1967 and is showing rampant wear and tear. Portions of the false ceiling in the out-patient department, which is visited by 2,000 patients every day, have broken and water is seeping through it. The hospital staff has witnessed several instances of chunks of concrete falling off the ceiling, resulting in injuries to people. The walls have damp patches, crumbling plaster and bubbling paint.

The Public Works Department (PWD) had, in 2017, stated in a report that the building wasn’t fit to be used, and should be renovated. In August last year, the health department had confirmed they were planning to renovate the hospital and increase the number of beds to 300. However, the proposal hadn’t progressed since. “It is not clear yet how much time the renovation will take. The design needs to be finalised and the decision will be taken after the elections. In the meantime, departments will be relocated,” Khatri said.
