All the three fronts are claiming advantage over the increase of 5.69 percentage points in voting in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, which witnessed a triangular tussle this time.
The United Democratic Front, Left Democratic Front, and National Democratic Alliance camps are busy evaluating various socio- politico- religious factors that contributed to the high voter turnout.
The final polling tally of Thrissur is 77.86%.
There are 13.36 lakh voters in the Thrissur constituency, including around 7.5 female voters.
In the 2014 elections, CPI’s C.N. Jayadevan won by a majority of 38,227 votes against Congress candidate K.P. Dhanapalan. When Mr. Jayadevan secured 3,89,209 votes, Mr. Dhanapalan got 3,50,982 votes.
BJP’s K.P. Sreeshan got 1,02,681 votes to come third. It is also important to analyse where the 44,638 voters, who voted for AAP candidate Sara Joseph last time, have cast their votes.
Not only the national factors, but also the personal influence of candidates on the electorate and communal polarisation of society have influenced the voting rate.
The UDF claims the anti-Modi wave that swept the country had contributed to the increase in the voting percentage.
Minority votes
It says there has been consolidation of minority votes against the NDA and that will benefit the UDF.
The voters’ ire against the fascist regime of the BJP and its attempt to communalise society reflected in the higher voter turnout, according to the LDF camp.
However, the NDA believes the image of action hero Suresh Gopi was one of the major factors that contributed to the increase in voting percentage here.
It also believes that the Sabarimala issue will favour it in a big way. It is important that the BJP, which won around 1 lakh votes in the last Lok Sabha elections, had doubled its vote share in the next Assembly elections. Thrissur is one of the constituencies which the BJP banks its hopes on.
