Passengers can choose their profile in the app, tap on ‘My FACES’ and record a short video of their face before scanning their passport. Once done, the AirAsia ground staff will verify the passenger’s face and passport information. One time verification is required before breezing through the airport gates. FACES is available only for adults aged 18 and above.

According to CEO of AirAsia, Tony Fernandez, this feature is currently launched in the Senai Airport in Johor. It will hopefully roll out to other airports in Malaysia soon if they had partners who supported their digital initiatives. AirAsia claims that the process has a 98% success rate which is pretty impressive.

FACES is fully owned and operated by AirAsia. Passengers can register their FACES and passport on AirAsia mobile app for a true seamless travel experience in certain airports like Senai.

Elsewhere, facial recognition is gaining traction at airports. The Department of Homeland Security says it expects to use facial recognition technology on 97 percent of departing passengers within the next four years.
