Cape Town - South African Olympic champion Caster Semenya claimed her maiden 5 000m title at the ASA Senior Championships in Germiston on Thursday.

Semenya cruised to a win by crossing the finish line in a time of 16:05.99 edging Dom Scott-Efurd.

This is Semenya's first race since her IAAF ruling. Semenya is challenging proposals by the International Association of Athletics Federations that aim to restrict female athletes' testosterone levels.

The IAAF is seeking to force so-called "hyperandrogenic" athletes or those with "differences of sexual development" (DSD) to seek treatment to lower their testosterone levels below a prescribed amount if they wish to continue competing as women.

The athletics governing body has argued the moves are necessary to create a "level playing field" for other female athletes.

A verdict is expected at the end of this month.

Earlier this week, Semenya was the honoured on Time's list of the '100 most influential people of 2019'.

Semenya will race in the women's 800m on the final day on Saturday.
