Police top brass revisit security post Lankan terror strikes

MANGALURU: In the aftermath of terror attack in Sri Lanka, police top brass in the state has moved quickly to review the security measures in places, evident from city police chiefs both in Bengaluru and Mangaluru reviewing the same on Thursday. In Mangaluru, city police chief Sandeep Patil reviewed the scenario with more than 100 plus stakeholders in an effort to sensitize them on measures that need to be in place to prevent such attacks.
The meeting, Sandeep Patil told TOI, reviewed security measures already in place, and need to upgrade them wherever need for it was felt. Administrators of vital installations such as MPRL, NMPT, Mangaluru International Airport, malls, IT bellwether and all religious places were involved in this stakeholders meeting, he said adding police on its part has given them advisory on steps that need to be put in place to prevent such incidents.

The advisory included ensuring that vital installations had proper compound walls, access controls, CCTVs, door fitted metal detectors, security guards duly vetted by the police, he said. Recalling his experience of visiting a place that receives heavy footfalls, Patil observed that security guards there seemed clueless on how to use the door fitted metal detectors or hand metal detectors and training will be organised for them next week.
Besides, Karnataka Public Place Safety Act now mandates places that receive heavy footfalls such as malls, religious places to have CCTVs which cover all public places on their premises with cameras of good resolution. Observing that most such places already have CCTVs installed, Patil said instructions were given to them to ensure that they are in working condition and that there are no blind spots in their CCTV coverage.
