Turning metal into art with Kre8Now Makerspace

Makers may jasmine created c1 3 david and i are here with michael at kre8now makerspace in lexington and we're about to get learned.

David: getting our hands dirty, having so much fun.

Michael: going to get learned.

Educated.

Amber: yeah, exactly.

Michael: educated.

Amber: hey, you know our language.

Michael: i do know your language.

Kentucky boy through and through.

Amber: ah, there you go.

All right michael.

We've been showing throughout the kind of segments what you guys do here.

Now, you're actually going to put us to the test.

But first of all, for people like us, you offer classes.

Michael: we do offer classes.

We've been going over this cool looking horse head that we're going to go out there and cut out of metal.

Amber: david just drew it up real quick, let's be honest.

David: a little something i put together.

Michael: yeah, yeah, really cool.

Little artistic horse head there.

We're going to take this file after we've drawn it up here, and we're going to take it into a cnc machine, which is computer numerated control, and it's going to tell that computer where to cut the metal.

Yeah, we offer classes to both our members and nonmembers.

We encourage the public to come in and take these classes.

It introduces them to a machine that they've never used before, gives them a taste of something they could do if they wanted to become a member, and where they could do, and or just plain just learn a skill just because they want to learn something.

Amber: what are we doing?

Take us through this process.

Michael: what we're going to do with this file that we just drew up, we're going to take it out here to a cnc plasma cutting table.

This plasma cutter actually cuts steel.

We're going to make an ornamental piece there that you can take home with you.

Amber: all right, michael, let's go make this happen.

Michael: you're going to put that file in and you're just going to hit play really.

It's simple as playing a vcr or something.

David: that's a lot easier than me having to hand carve this out.

It's just really putting it all, the creativity part, together.

How long does this usually take somebody to do in the whole process?

Michael: we can actually... when we teach this class, we can actually have someone come in, draw what they want.

Sometimes they've already got an idea of what they want.

They might bring their favorite cat or they just may want their name or their address of their home.

Before the class is over, within two or three hours, they're out there already making something out of metal.

Amber: metal magic.

All right, what's this machine doing right now?

Michael: it is basically, the file that we just put in there, is a bunch of numbers, xy coordinates.

It's going to tell it where to take the cutter in the sequence that it needs to go to draw this image that, still can't figure out what it is, but when it's done, i think it's going to be a horse.

David: i love it.

I'm pretty proud of it too honestly amber.

Amber: is this dangerous?

Michael: yes, it could be that's why you've got all this protective gear on because it is a very bright light and splashing and sparks and stuff so we've got you all covered with your protective gear and whatnot.

David: i love it.

Amber: that's why we go to the experts.

David: now, you guys have a special going on right now.

If somebody wants to join, what's that special for you guys?

Michael: right now, for your viewers, it's if you use the discount code, midday50, that's 5-0, you'll get 50% off your first month's membership.

Amber: very cool.

All right, guys, we survived.

I like that david and i were all geared up and you were just the expert.

Michael: yeah, yeah.

David: just had his glasses on, just professional.

Amber: well, here's our final product.

Unreal that it comes out so precise and gorgeous.

David: so quick.

Michael: looks just like what you drew.

David: yeah, this really cool though.

I mean, you guys do offer so much.

If people want to come down, and they want to jump into this class, what do they need to do?

Michael: all they have to do is check us out on kre8now.com.

Come down for a tour or even just look at the calendar and see what classes have going on that month, or that evening.

Last minute, you want to do something, come out here and just chill with your friends and take a class.

Amber: ah, david, you might want to sign up because i noticed when you were polishing, it was jumping around.

David: definitely not a professional yet, but i will be back for more classes.

Amber: yeah, we both are coming.

This is so, so cool.

Thank you so much for having us.

Michael: you're welcome.

Thank you for coming.

Amber: that's our creation.

David: that's our baby.

Amber: our horse head.

Midday kentucky will be right
