Climate activists target London's financial districtClimate change protesters glued themselves to the London Stock Exchange on Thursday morning. They were also out in force outside investment bank Goldman Sachs European Headquarters -- with activists who had chained themselves together removed and arrested by police. And at one of the financial district's main stations, 83-year-old climate activist Phil Kingston brought banners and his packed lunch to climb on top of a train in the morning rush hour with several others..... SOUNDBITE (English) CLIMATE CHANGE ACTIVIST, PHIL KINGSTON, 83, SAYING: "We don't own this Earth. So I'm just not accepting that we treat it as just our property to do what heck we like and it's doing terrible damage." Mr Kingston was later removed and arrested on suspicion of obstructing a railway.... Protesters also blocked a road near the Bank of England as they sang Bob Marley's 'One Love' The protest group Extinction Rebellion advocates non-violent civil disobedience to force governments to reduce carbon emissions And to avert what it says is a global climate crisis that will bring starvation, floods, wildfires and social collapse. Government statistics say total UK greenhouse gas emissions in 2017 were 43 percent lower than in 1990. This was the 11th day of London protests and police said more than a thousand arrests had been made so far. The protesters say more 'direct action' like this is planned in future. | |||||
