AHMEDABAD: A new and more secure in-line baggage screening system will be installed at the domestic terminal of Sardar
Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport by July 31, Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials told reporters on Wednesday. The system will be installed and commissioned within 90 days. Until that happens, passengers in the domestic terminal will have to get their baggage manually screened before check-in
“The new system will scan baggage with 3D imaging technique. The screener will be able to view the bag from different angles, thus making the process more secure,” said Manoj Gangal, director, SVPI airport.
Gangal said, “The current system only captures linear images of the baggage. High resolution 3D images will help detect explosive devices, if any, more effectively. The new system will also have an automatic tag reader that can help track the luggage till it reaches the aircraft.”
“We plan to install some five standalone X-ray machines to screen baggage until 3D scanning begins. So, once a passenger enters the terminal building from the departure area, he or she will have to get the baggage scanned and then proceed towards the check-in counter,” said Gangal.
When asked if passengers need to report early at the city airport, the airport director said, “With five X-ray machines the process will be quick and passengers won’t have to end up waiting in queues.”
The same system will be implemented at the international terminal by September 30, this year, confirmed officials. AAI has spent Rs 21.3 crore for procuring the new baggage scanning system.
