DMK candidate files nomination papers for Tirupparankundram bypoll

P. Saravanan, who unsuccessfully contested the last byelection to the constituency as DMK candidate, filed his nomination papers in Madurai for the Tirupparankundram bypoll.

The filing of nomination papers by candidates intending to contest the May 19 bypolls to four Assembly constituencies in the State commenced on Monday.

This is the second byelection Tirupparankundram is facing since the 2016 Assembly elections of Tamil Nadu. S.M. Seenivel, who got elected as AIADMK candidate, died due to illness even before taking charge. A.K. Bose, who won the byelection in November 2016 as AIADMK candidate, died in August 2018, necessitating another byelection.

Mr. Bose’s election was meanwhile set aside by Madras High Court in March as the Election Commission of India accepted the thumb impression of late Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa instead of her signature on the nomination papers of Bose in violation of procedures. His election was contested in the court by Mr. Saravanan.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Vladivostok for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Thursday’s summit reflects Russia’s effort to position itself as an essential player in the North Korean nuclear standoff.

Mr. Kim’s first trip to Russia comes about two months after his second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, which failed because of disputes over U.S.-led sanctions on the North.

Manchester City beats Manchester United 2-0, back on top of Premier League

Manchester City is closing in on another Premier League title. Manchester United is increasingly unlikely to even make the top four.

In a derby match that highlighted the chasm that has formed between the two fierce rivals, City kept the destination of the title in its own hands by winning 2-0 thanks to goals by Bernardo Silva and substitute Leroy Sane at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

An 11th straight victory in the league moved City one point above Liverpool with three games left this season in its bid to become the first team to retain the trophy since United in 2009. - AP

Illinois boy found buried in shallow grave; parents charged

Authorities searching for a missing 5-year-old Illinois boy who had lived in deplorable conditions dug up his body on Wednesday and charged his parents with murder, sadly declaring that the youngster would “no longer have to suffer.”

The body, believed to be that of Andrew “AJ” Freund, was covered in plastic and buried in a shallow grave in a rural area of Woodstock in McHenry County, Crystal Lake police Chief James Black said.

Black said investigators went to the site after they interviewed the boy’s parents overnight and presented them with cellphone evidence. Woodstock is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) northwest of Chicago and a few miles from the family’s home in Crystal Lake. - AP
