A G4S driver has appeared in court charged with stealing almost £1m in cash from one of the firm's vans.

Joel March, 36, is said to have fled with deposit boxes from the vehicle after parking it in Larkhall Rise in Clapham, south-west London on Tuesday.

The charge states he stole £970,000 from G4S.

Mr March, of Rectory Grove, Clapham, appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court charged with theft by employee.

He will next appear at Inner London Crown Court at a date to be fixed.

The Met said "a quantity" of cash has been recovered.

A spokeswoman for G4S, a major government contractor, said such incidents were "extremely rare".

She added: "We are working closely with the Metropolitan Police to resolve the matter."
