Florida ex-cop gets 25 years for killing black motorist

A former Florida police officer was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Thursday for fatally shooting a black motorist who was waiting for a tow truck in 2015.

Church musician Corey Jones was reportedly leaving a band gig when his car broke down in Palm Beach Gardens in October of 2015.

Police officer Nouman Raja, who was on plainclothes duty, approached Jones' car that he thought was an abandoned vehicle before sunrise.

Prosecutors argued Raja acted aggressively and never identified himself, which they said likely startled Jones to mistake him for a robber.

Police said Jones pulled out a handgun that he had legally purchased three days earlier before Raja fired at him six times within 13 seconds.

Jones later died of a gunshot wound to his chest.

Raja was convicted last month of manslaughter and first-degree murder.

The conviction is said to be unusual in a country where a disproportionate amount of officer-involved shooting victim deaths are black men, and police officers rarely face prosecution.

Raja's attorneys condemned the notion that Raja, a Muslim man of Asian descent, was motivated by racial prejudice.
