A restaurant has been slammed on social media for 'misusing' the word Anzac to promote a burger.

Thuggs Fried Chicken and Waffles, in Leederville, WA, shared a photo of the 'Anzac Burger' to Facebook on Wednesday.

The limited edition burger - which has since been removed from the menu - contained Anzac biscuits in the fried chicken crumb.

'DOUBLE errythang [sic]. Chicken, bacon, sausage, cheese, pickle, jalapenos!,' the post said.

Social media users criticised the popular restaurant for using the patriotic acronym to advertise their product.

'I don't really think using Anzac Day as sales booster for your burger joint is gonna be well received,' one user said.

'What's the gross greasy burger got to do with Anzac Day?' another questioned.

Thuggs Fried Chicken & Waffles owner DJ Karl Blue has apologised and said the restaurant didn't mean to offend anyone.

'Earlier this week we designed a burger for Anzac Day purely to let our customers know that we would be open our normal business hours on this public holiday,' Mr Blue in a statement on Thursday.

'The burger had all our usual ingredients and even contained Anzac biscuits in the fried chicken crumb because well, they are damn delicious. I named the burger 'The Anzac' because it would be exactly for that day only.'

'Not one shred of malice or disrespect was intended in naming the burger. If I offended anyone I deeply and sincerely apologies to you all,' Mr Blue said.

'I have removed the burger from the menu and all advertising has been deleted from Thuggs social media. Again, I am very sorry and thank you for your support.'

Mr Blue claimed he was unaware of the legal issues associated as businesses must be issued a permit when using the word 'Anzac' to sell products.

Individuals can be fined up to $10,200, while corporations can be fined up to $51,000 for misusing the word under the Crimes Act 1914.

'With all my years in the Perth Nightclub Industry I have seen bars sell gigantic cocktails called "The Anzac Spirit" I have seen nightclubs sell triple tequila shots called "Anzacs" and I have even seen synthetic marijuana being sold over the counter as "Anzac Green" so I was completely unaware of the laws about naming a Chicken Burger,' Mr Blue said.

'Yes I should have researched my position regardless of what I've seen in the past and for that I am very sorry.'
