A 35-year-old man, who was on the run after allegedly killing his wife in a Wadala slum on April 20, was arrested from Delhi on Wednesday. He was brought to the city on Thursday.

The Wadala TT police, investigating the case, stated that the accused, Fazul Qureshi, attacked his wife Rita, 32, using a sharp weapon.

According to the police, the couple, who resided in Kalwa, Thane, would frequently have heated arguments over financial issues. On the day of the murder, Rita was at her parents’ home in Bhartiya Kamla Nagar, Wadala. Around 11am, Fazul went to meet Rita and slit her throat with a sharp weapon and fled the spot. It is unclear if the couple had argued before the murder or if Fazul had come to the Wadala slum with the intention of murdering Rita, police said.

Investigations revealed that while bleeding profusely, Rita attempted to seek help from her neighbours, having collapsed around 10 feet away from her home. Some neighbours and locals alerted the police who then rushed Rita to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival. “Prima facie, the reason behind the murder seems to be financial issues and marital disputes. The victim was a home-maker, while the accused sold clothes on footpaths. He would not give the victim any money to run the house,” said Rajendra Sangle, senior inspector, Wadala TT police station.

Police stated that after committing the murder, Fazul frequently changed his locations. Acting on information that Fazul has left for Delhi in a train, teams were dispatched to Delhi and his native place in Uttar Pradesh. The police received information about Fazul going to Bhajanpura in Delhi, following which, he was arrested from the area.
