The Civil Hospital in Sector 10 is facing a staff shortage, which is affecting health services such as maternity and child care, data provided by the district health department has revealed.

Currently, the hospital doesn’t have a pharmacist, a lab technician or a radiographer. Also, 69 of the 90 sanctioned posts for staff nurses are lying vacant. The hospital also lacks a clinical psychologist and a physiotherapist.

The hospital’s newly inaugurated Special Newborn Care Unit (SCNU) doesn’t have a single child specialist or dedicated medical officers and staff nurses.

According to the ministry of health and family welfare, an SCNU has to be established at district hospitals that see more than 3,000 deliveries in a year. It is a separate unit close to the labour room with 12 or more beds and managed by trained doctors and nurses. The SCNU at Civil Hospital currently has eight beds.

A medical officer, on the condition of anonymity said, “The current posts need to be filled before any further plans of expansion are made. It is difficult to manage operations with less staff.”

However, Dr BK Rajora, civil surgeon, said the vacancies have been advertised and recruitment is underway. “These posts will be filled soon,” he said.
