BJP is all set in Varanasi for Lok Sabha Elections 2019 and the party has also started campaigning in the crucial venue of Uttar Pradesh. PM Narendra Modi is BJP’s candidate in Varanasi. For Congress, Priyanka Gandhi is expected to be face in Varanasi for Lok Sabha polls, but the local Congress local unit is still waiting for the official declaration by party. As a result, the campaigning is affected as the name of candidate from Varanasi is not announced yet.
The local unit is yet to go into poll mode. On Wednesday, while BJP was campaigning with Modi’s road show, the office of Congress was locked. “The local party unit is 105 per cent sure that Priyankaji will contest from here. If the party had to field another candidate, it would have already announced the name. There must be a strategy behind the delay,” Congress state secretary and in-charge of Varanasi, Durga Prasad Gupta was quoted by The Indian Express.
“Priyanka Gandhi is likely to take another boat ride from Varanasi to Ballia next week. If Priyanka is fielded from Varanasi, the party will also do well in the adjoining constituencies of Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Ghazipur and Chandauli”, he further said.
As Varanasi goes to polls on May 19, 2019, there are only four days left for candidates to file their nominations. PM Modi is expected to file his nomination on Friday. For Congress, it looks like they are going behind the schedule in Varanasi and need to hurry up.
The election campaigning for Congress in Varanasi is also hit by the delay as people are asking the local leaders who is their candidate against PM Modi. According to local leaders, the poll campaign will only gain pace after party gives the official word on candidate.
