Man arrested over woman's body found on street in Chinatown
A man has been arrested after a woman's body was found on the streets of Chinatown on Wednesday morning.
The 33-year-old woman was found by a passerby on Celestial Avenue, near Little Bourke Street just after 6.30am.
Homicide squad detectives arrested the 32-year-old man on Wednesday afternoon and he is assisting police.
A post mortem will be done overnight to confirm her cause of death, which is being treated as suspicious.
Police earlier said the woman's body had no apparent injuries.
Her next of kin is yet to be notified.
The body could be seen covered with a blanket outside the Supper Inn, early on Wednesday morning as police gathered at the scene.
Several unmarked police vans were parked in the street by early morning.
Police cordoned off Chinatown from Russell Street and nearly to Swanston Street. At lunchtime, business owners did not yet know when the street would reopen, as police were unable to say.
Police also taped off a car parked on Russell Street, around the corner from the scene.
"At this stage this car is not linked to the woman’s body located this morning near Little Bourke Street," a police spokeswoman said.
Detectives were asking business owners on Russell Street if they had CCTV vision, but it is not known if this was in relation to the car or the woman's death.
