Kalburgi murder: SIT submits first status report in court

BENGALURU: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the murder of scholar–rationalist MM Kalburgi submitted its first status report to the High Court Bench in Dharwad on Wednesday.
Two bike-borne men had shot dead MM Kalburgi inside his Kalyan Nagar residence at 8.40am on August 30, 2015. The FIR stated the unidentified visitors struck a conversation with the scholar and his wife Umadevi, who went inside thinking the duo was his students. She then heard gunshots and rushed to the hall to find the duo had fled and Kalburgi lay in a pool of blood. He died on the way to hospital.
Initially, the case was investigated by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) which had arrested three men. In February, the Supreme Court passed an order directing the SIT, which is probing the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh, to take over the case.

The report contained details of the investigations carried, sources said. “We’ve mentioned that a few arrested in Gauri murder case have been identified as prime suspects in Kalburgi case. We’ve taken statements from them and need more time to collect evidence,” SIT sources said.
Pune-based Amol Kale, who is said to have played a vital role in executing the killing of Gauri, is involved in Kalburgi case too, they added.
